Google Transit My FREE Trip Advisor !

Google Transit My FREE Trip Advisor !

Just as great bikes are conceived in garages, so is it with Google Transit that was born in Google Labs as a 20% project in the December of 2005. Being a fanatic of Google Maps, it was love at first sight when I learned how Transit works with Google Maps to help people plan trips on public transit and that too for free. Technology at its best possible usage for mankind!

You have to just enter your source and destination points, and Transit gives you step by step instructions for reaching your destination either by walk, car, public transport or rails as instant display on your laptop screens or on your fancy touch screen mobiles. Transit does it all to become your age old travel guide but with a touch of the modern. Transit works for all of us - If you are a jogger in search of greener, shorter tracks, if you are a cabbie stuck in bumper-to-bumper  traffic, if you are not lazy to hire expensive Trip Advisors (me guesses these guys use Transit too!), if you want to plan a value-for-money vacation trip or even if you are the Common Man like me, who needs to  know the bus routes and the nearest tube/metro station.

Im fascinated by the various innovative ways in which Transit is helping the city planners, users and agencies alike in a win-win game:
  • Primarily Transit is making travelling via Public Transport glamorous.
  • Its helping riders to discover new and faster routes, thereby maximizing there riding experience.
  • Agencies are linking to there agency website and increasing rider awareness.
  • Transit is improving inter-agency connectivity by connecting  various agency data.
  • Not to forget that with these sincere efforts, Transit is reducing the daily congestion of traffic, decreasing environmental road blocks and increasing mobility in this fast food world.
Transit with all these features for free, is trying hard to increase its reach in terms of covering more and more ground. At present, Transit is serving as a tour guide and advisor in more than 448 cities and the list is growing. After covering enough bases in US, Canada, Central America, South America, Asia, Europe, Oceania and AfricaGoogle Transit has touched Pune, India as announced on 3rd Jan,2011 via the official Google India Blog. Finally, after a 5-year wait, my city Pune and its maddening circular routes are no more rocket science to me!

PMPML- Punes city bus service has shared its public transport information to Google Maps. Being aware of the sorry state of public transport, Im glad we no more have to burn our fuel to avoid her wrath. At least this move would mitigate congestion, save energy and reduce environmental concerns. Nevertheless this is a bold move from the PMPML, trying to give a bit of comfort to the 1 million passengers(approx) travelling daily. With information on their finger tips, not only are these daily commuters going to have relief but also the tourists and expats who often travel to Pune for business and pleasure.

The success of this project is bound to attract and motivate other transportation agencies in the coming future and they are bound to walk the same way as PMPML. With Pune being one of Indias hottest education and software destination with 3G on cards and Metros lined up in the near future, we at Lighthouse Insights find this project creating buzz amongst the techies - the young and the old alike.

By the way, Pune is second to implement Transit with regards to bus services after Bengaluru (Bangalore) in India. Delhi and Kolkata have mapped their metro services with Transit and so has Chennai. However, it remains to be seen how Mumbai will adapt Transit to make its nightmare of a public transportation system less frightening, more simplified, faster and within the means of its aam aadmi.

So the next time you are in Pune, you dont need to listen to the local radio jockeys for static traffic information, you can simply use Google Transit for live data like we did.
We did a small search to find out the fastest way to reach Pune Station with the use of PMPML transit from Kothrud Depot,Pune and the results were really convincing. Advanced options and different ways of transportation makes Google Transit really likable and efficient.
Transit Direction for PMPML in Pune,India.

Looking forward to see the Metro transit to be up there on Google Transit. Amen.
Yes dont forget to share your experiences with using Google Transit in Pune or anywhere else.
