Gua Charas Panching
Gua Charas Panching
Gua Charas - truly a hidden gem!
A friend and I was on a road trip to the east coast of peninsular Malaysia and we have come across a few interesting places on our way. Topping the list is Gua Charas, a cave located outside of Kuantan which houses a few Hindu and Buddhist temples.
Getting to Gua Charas can be tricky. There isnt a proper tarred road, and you would need to enter a private estate using a rocky, pothole-laden one-lane road to get there. Having said that, Gua Charas is not accessible by public transport.
How to Get to Gua Charas
- Go onto the Kuantan-Sungai Lembing road (C4) and you will notice a brown signboard stating Gua Charas
- Turn right and go onto Jalan Gua Charas on a Y-intersection
- Drive for about one kilometer through the oil palm plantation. Gua Charas will be on your right
Gua Charas Admission Fee
Parking - RM2
Entrance Fee - RM2/per person
The first flight of stairs leading to the gates, which are guarded by dinosaurs. (I dont get the relevance)
There are a few temples on this level:
Entrance fee is collected here before you are allowed to venture further:
Dont even think about wearing heels. At the end of the steps, you will come across the following signboard:
Walk down another flight of stairs and you will see many Buddhist and Hindu god statues scattered all over the ground
TBH, it was a little eerie in there especially when there wasnt anyone else in the cave at that time.
Hopeless vandals
The Sleeping Buddha is located right at the very end:
Turns out there is another path leading upwards on the left of the temple cave entrance. You should definitely take the climb to enjoy the more scenic part of the cave:
Gua Charas is definitely the place to go to if you are looking for some adventures as it is off the beaten track. Unlike Batu Caves, Gua Charas is free from surges of worshipers and curious tourists. This gives you plenty of time and space for some exploration!
